Dane McCormack generously sharing his story during BRAIN AWARENESS WEEK at The HUB

At The HUB, I believe in the power of community and connection, plus the ability to find light even in the darkest of times. As part of Brain Awareness Week, I had the privilege of hosting a morning tea with Dane McCormack, a truly inspiring individual whose story is a testament to strength, perseverance, and the healing power of gratitude.

Dane’s Journey – Facing Adversity with Gratitude

Dane’s life changed dramatically when he was admitted to hospital for cancer treatment. During his stay, he developed an infection that led to an acquired brain injury (ABI). What was initially a battle against cancer became an even greater challenge ...

12 months in the hospital, adjusting to significant changes, and facing a new reality.

There were many losses along the way, but what stood out in Dane’s story was his unwavering commitment to daily gratitude. Even in the midst of hardship, Dane made a conscious effort to find something to be thankful for each day. His ability to focus on the positives, no matter how small, became a crucial part of his journey ... a lesson for all of us in resilience and perspective.

Living with Alexithymia

As a result of his brain injury, Dane now lives with alexithymia, a condition that affects a person’s ability to identify and express emotions. People with alexithymia may struggle to describe how they feel or connect with emotions in the way they once did. It can be challenging to navigate relationships and self-expression when emotions feel distant or unrecognisable.

However, Dane has not let this define him. Instead, he has found ways to reconnect with his body and emotions through movement, mindfulness, and community.

The Role of Yin Yoga in Dane’s Healing

Since joining our Yin Yoga sessions at The HUB, Dane has experienced a remarkable shift. Through stillness, breathwork, and deep connection with the body, he has started to regain a sense of feeling. While words may not always come easily, the practice of Yin Yoga has provided a safe space for reconnection and self-awareness.

It is incredible to witness Dane’s journey and the way he shows up consistently, not just for his own healing but as a source of inspiration for those around him. His story is a powerful reminder that healing is not just about the mind ... it’s about the body, the breath, and the small, intentional acts of self-care that lead to transformation.

A Story That Inspires Us All

Dane’s journey teaches us that even in the face of unimaginable challenges, there is always a way forward. Through gratitude, resilience, and community, we can find strength where we least expect it.

Thank you Dane, for sharing your story and for reminding us that healing is possible in many forms. Your courage and determination inspire us all.

With gratitude
